Gertrude Dixon Enfield Papers, . 1744-1964

Gertrude Dixon Enfield (died 1969) of Laguna Beach, Calif., was a faculty member of the University of Southern California interested in the Houston family of North Carolina. The collection contains the manuscript of a biography (191 pages) of Christopher Houston (1744-1837) of Iredell County, N.C., Revolutionary soldier and early settler in Maury County, Tenn., by Gertrude Dixon Enfield, including transcriptions of about forty letters by Houston (originals in the Mary Hunter Kennedy Papers, Southern Historical Collection), and discussions of other members of the Houston family; transcriptions of related letters, including a long letter, 1876, from Adlai E. Stevenson (1835-1914) describing his visit to Statesville, N.C., hometown of his ancestors, and letters, 1864, 1865, and 1888, from Peter Singleton Wilkes about family history; and a few related photographs made in the 1950s. Gertrude Dixon Enfield (died 1969) of Laguna Beach, Calif., was a faculty member of the University of Southern California interested in the Houston family of North Carolina.
